Allison Schmidt kicked off the first day of Olympic competition Saturday by earning bronze.
The 22-year-old 2008 Canton High School graduate was part of the women's 400-meter freestyle relay, along with Missy Franklin, Jessica Hardy and Lia Neal, the Detroit Free Press reported. The team's total time of 3:34.24 set a U.S. record in the event, the Free Press reported.
Schmitt will swim this morning in the prelims of the 400 freestyle.
