Canton Gymnasts Take Care of Northville

Chiefs roll past KLAA foe.

The Northville and Canton High School gymnastics teams faced each other Thursday night for the third meet of the season in the Plymouth High School gymnasium.

In the end, the Canton A team won with a score of 141.9 over Northville, which posted a score of 125.45. Canton B had a score of 103.9.

The first round of competition started with the vault and uneven bars. Some of the high scores for the vaults came from Erica and Robin Piwowar, both from Canton, with a 9.45. They were somewhat matched throughout the first round with captain Brooke Granowicz, of Canton, scoring an 8.4 on the vault and Taylor from Northville scoring an 8.15 on the uneven bars.

"We work hard, we work together and we came to win," Granowicz said.

After being asked what they need to do for the next meet she replied, "We have gotten the nerves out and now we need to be more relaxed."

The next round of competition brought the balance beam and floor routines.

With the beat of the music pumping, energy in the gym increased. The girls concentrated on the beam work and tumbled to the sounds of their music.

Northville has a much smaller team this year.

"This is a rebuilding year for us,” Mustangs coach Erin McWatt said. “We lost six seniors from last year.  The girls are working hard and we are concentrating on earning enough qualifying scores to go to regionals."

Victoria Clay and Allison Kemp both agree that they are improving a lot. They have been working on getting higher starting values and that has helped.
