Canton Public Library Gets New Study Rooms

Canton middle school students conceptualized and raised funds for the project.

Canton Public Library added six new study rooms last week at its east end, making a grand total of nine in the library not including the area for quiet study.

"We had three study rooms there before we added the additional ones," said Laurie Golden, department head of library community relations. "They are basically taking up space where there were just some study tables."

Funding for the project came from the work of a team of Destination Imagination students. Golden said they are a group of middle school students from Canton Township that worked together to raise money for the library.

The team of Destination Imagination students included Nithika Sivashankar, Abinand Thiruvenkat, Rishi Mahesh, Sanjana Sathrasala, Pooja Bharadwaj, Ananya Yanamandra and Sruthi Sundar.

She said they, who are big library users, read about the library's budget cuts and wanted to give back.

"They had a variety of functions," she said. "One was a talent show, and they also solicited donations from the community."

They raised $2,300 last year for the new study rooms, she said.

Golden said the library's board asked the students where they wanted to allocate the money. The students said they frequently used the study rooms, which are in high demand, and could use more space for group projects, she said.

The new study rooms are designed for study and meeting of groups, with three rooms for individuals or pairs -- like literacy tutors -- and accommodation for up to eight people in the others.

Study rooms are available free of charge and are open during library hours. They are available on a first come, first served basis.
