Eight contestants devoured copious amounts of beef and cheddar Tuesday for a cause.

In an event sponsored by Chicks 4 Charity, a local group that conducts a variety of fundraisers for different groups, amateur competitive eaters downed plates full of slider burgers at Canton's Crow's Nest Bar & Grill while spectators placed their bets on their favorite competitor.

Proceeds — which organizer Tammy Brown estimated as ranging between $1,200 and $1,500 — benefited Plymouth's First Step, a program that provides assistance for abused woman and children.

Canton's Seth Kleinglass walked away with the title, consuming 12 slider burgers, just two short of the restaurant's record of 14. Despite having consumed so much food, Kleinglass said he felt fine afterwards and was glad to help out a good cause while having fun.

Approaching the Crow's Nest record of 14 sliders wasn't a concern. Kleinglass' strategy, he said, was just beating everyone else.
