Developer Sues Canton, Blocks Access to Road in Cherry Hill Village

Developer accuses township of using property it doesn't own to build road, parking area.

Cherry Ridge LLC, a developer, has filed a lawsuit accusing Canton Township of using property it doesn't own in Cherry Hill Village to build a road and parking area for patrons of the Village Theater and other nearby amenities, according to the Canton Observer.

Befuddled Canton officials, theater employees and residents of Cherry Hill Village last week found concrete barriers blocking access to West Road—a short road running north from Cherry Hill Road to the Canton Human Services Center—that runs alongside nearby parking lots, the report said.

According to the report, the barricades forced theater patrons to find alternate parking as far north as Preservation Park, and also restricted parking access to the Human Services Center.

The lawsuit was filed Nov. 2 in Wayne County Circuit Court, the report said, and alleges the township built West Road, a parking lot, water-sewer lines and detention ponds on property it didn't own.

Township Attorney Kristin Kolb told the Observer a different company owned the property a decade ago and had intended to eventually transfer the land when the township began its development.
