New Burger Place Hopes to Stuff Plymouth Customers With Creative Concoctions
Jay's Stuffed Burgers in Plymouth opened in October.
While having a scoop of mashed potatoes or macaroni and cheese might make for a good side dish for a hamburger, Jay and Jon Kizy of Royal Oak are using such ingredients at their new Plymouth restaurant as the heart of the burger.
Jay's Stuffed Burgers opened Oct. 1 at 600 W. Ann Arbor Trail in Plymouth, the former Zapatas Mexican Kitchen building. It offers gourmet hamburgers wrapped around a variety of fresh, premium ingredients for several varieties of stuffed burgers.
Stuffed burgers differ from traditional burgers in that the ingredients are cooked inside of the burger, instead of being piled on top.
"We just started messing around and one day I had watched this hamburger contest on TV and they were stuffing the burgers," Jay Kizy said.
The burgers on TV, he said, were quite large and were losing their stuffing.
So, Jay Kizy said, he set out to perfect the stuffed burger.
"I said there has to be a way where most of (the ingredients) will stay with the burger," he said. "I started working with it, started making them at home."
From there, he said, he branched out to family events and then were asked to cater organized events. With the fledgling success, Jon Kizy said, the brothers soon needed a storefront.
Originally planning to start a business near Ann Arbor, the brothers stumbled upon the former Zapatas building, just steps from Kellogg Park in downtown Plymouth.
The brothers say they always are coming up with new ingredients to try stuffing into a burger.
"When we first saw the stuffed burgers (on TV), they were only stuffed with cheese," Jon Kizy said. "We can do so much more now."
Jay Kizy said the brothers try forming burgers with other foods they enjoy eating.
"Literally, you can stuff whatever you want in a burger," he said.
One example is the Italian, one of the eatery's rotating weekly specials, consisting of angel hair pasta, four-cheese marinara, diced Italian sausage, provolone and parmesan.
While the brothers are new to the Plymouth area, they're looking to become a fixture in the community. To help, the brothers said, they are offering a 10 percent holiday discount to visitors in December.
