The Northville Genealogical Society begins its new year on September 9 with a presentation “Seeing the Elephant: Female Soldiers and Spies in the Civil War". The presenter, Susan Nenadic, is a retired history and English teacher in Saline Area Schools. She has taught women's history at WCC, the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University.
Women have served our great nation in many capacities throughout the years. The Civil War was no exception. They were not only camp followers who took care of their husbands or served as nurses to treat the wounded soldiers. Some disguised themselves as men so they could fight in the War Between the States, while others acted as spies. Learn who these brave women were and how they made a difference. Discover how they were able to act as men without being detected in such a closely fought war.
The presentation will be held in the Northville District Library on September 9 at 3:00 p.m. A roundtable discussion will be held on a guide to the use of CD/DVD’s, presented by President Mike Parkinson, at 1:15 followed by a brief membership meeting and refreshments.
