Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony in Hines Park.
Come this September, Plymouth Township will be home to a newly completed First Responders Memorial for Wayne County police, fire and EMS agencies at the corner of Hines Drive and Haggerty Road. Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano said the memorial will be a tribute publicly to those who risk their lives day in and day out. "Many times it's so difficult to express the loss of someone who is a first responder," he said. "I think, like anything else, unfortunately for a couple of days, people sort of pay attention and then it fades from memory, which is really unfortunate. But the families carry on with it. It's like anything else, you never really leaves your heart. And if you have lost someone who is a first responder in the line of duty…

The Canton state representative and two of her colleagues are promoting a package of bills that supports women's health.
Discussions about women's health care in Michigan often revolve around one topic: abortion. But a package of bills supported by State Rep. Dian Slavens (D-Canton) and other House Democrats aims to change that. Slavens, Rep. Vicki Barnett (D-Farmington Hills) and Rep. Ellen Cogen Lipton (D-Huntington Woods) spoke at the Farmington Community Library Main Library Monday afternoon about four bills and three resolutions: "Earlier this year, House Democrats went on a listening tour ... and one of the things we heard repeatedly is that Michigan is letting down its women when it comes to access to health care," Lipton said. Democrats know they'll have to negotiate with their Republican colleagues to pass the bills, all of which have been …
Teachers, administrators and politicians gathered in Novi to discuss Michigan's responsibility toward educating its population.
Cuts to education funding in Michigan are a big concern for educators and parents of children in public schools. “We’re diverting a whole bunch of money from our public schools and I think it’s terrible,” said Michigan Sen. Hoon-Yung Hopgood (D-Taylor), at an education forum at Novi Middle School Monday night. Teachers, administrators and politicians came together at the forum to answer the question of what Michigan's responsibility is toward educating its population. “All of our schools are being required to do more with less,” said Sheila Paton, treasurer of the Plymouth-Canton Community school board. Panelists spent the first part of the evening discussing student performance. Bill Rustem, Governor Rick Snyder's director of strategy…

The Marketplace Fairness Act was approved this week in the U.S. Senate, and is headed to the Republican-controlled U.S. House for consideration. Both Michigan's senators voted for the bill, which would require merchants to collect state taxes on internet
Michigan's U.S. Sens. Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow, both Democrats, voted in support of a bill that requires merchants to collect state sales taxes for online purchases. The Marketplace Fairness Act passed the U.S. Senate 69-27 on Monday. Next up, the legislation goes to the GOP-led House. President Barack Obama has previously said he supports the bill. Supporters say the bill would level the paying field for traditional local retailers and collect much needed tax revenue for state. Opponents, including anti-tax activists and retailers, say it will be overly burdensome on small businesses and would effectively result in a tax increase. Neither Levin nor Stabenow issued public statements after Monday's vote explaining their support of the…

The $114.4 million bond proposal passed with a little more than 65 percent of the vote, according to unofficial results from the Wayne County Clerk. Barrett said he was thrilled, but surprised at the margin. "I'm surprised because I know there was a large last-minute effort by a number of people to put out 'vote no' signs and sent emails out - we were all a little bit worried …

Plymouth and Canton communities will decide whether Plymouth-Canton Community Schools will get a $114.4 million bond issue to build a new middle school and upgrade technology, facilities and buses.
Canton has had a steady stream of voters trickling into the polls on Election Day Tuesday, according to officials. In contrast, the City of Plymouth was experiencing light turnout all morning, according to the clerk's office. Canton reported 900 voters at its 10:30 a.m. call into the Wayne County Clerk's office. However, because of the nature of a special election, officials said they really couldn't compare to previous years because each election was something different. Canton residents McIver Richardson and his wife, Mary, stopped by their polling location, Summit on the Park, just before noon. Both voted yes for the $114.4 million bond proposal for Plymouth-Canton Schools. "Most neighborhoods want schools to have good education," …
