Branch Line School (www.branchlineschool.org) is a free, public charter school centrally located in Livonia and serving students in kindergarten through 7th grade (adding 8th grade in 2014). Founded and operated locally, BLS is a nonprofit, secular and independent charter school expressly designed to provide a personal, nurturing, child-centered lifelong learning community.
“Branch Line School was created by local parents and teachers who wanted a positive alternative to the ‘factory model’ of education that is so prevalent in area schools,” said Lori Brugman, founding President of the Board of Directors and mom to 7-year old Madeleine. “We believe that children deserve authentic respect for their creativity and individuality.”
Branch Line School program highlights include:
Small classes in a small school
Class sizes average 18; maximum school size is approximately 150 students including preschool.
Multiage classrooms use flexible grouping; instruction is personal to each child’s developmental level in each core content area.
This inquiry-based approach engages children’s natural curiosity and integrates core content into real-world applications.
Service to each other and the greater community is emphasized throughout the program so that students grow into engaged and thoughtful community members.
Parents are invited and encouraged to participate in the classroom. BLS has an open-door policy for parents to participate in the learning community.
Private preschool and young 5s programs inspired by the Reggio Emilia early childhood education philosophy are also available, ensuring a nurturing and cohesive learning home for students from preschool through middle school.
