“Sphinx Stars: Detroit” Competition Deadline Extended
Metro Detroit’s Young Musicians and Singers Now Have
Until Feb. 1, 2014 to Enter $10,000 Contest
The Sphinx Organization is hosting its second annual “Sphinx Stars: Detroit” competition, a program to showcase metro Detroit’s greatest young musical talent, and today announced the entry deadline has been extended to Feb. 1, 2014. The announcement was made by Afa S. Dworkin, executive and artistic director of Sphinx, a national arts and youth development non-profit organization dedicated to transforming lives through the power of diversity in the arts.
The contest, made possible by Ford Motor Company Fund, will culminate with the crowning of one $10,000 grand prize winner, and is open to vocalists and instrumentalists, ages 18 (as of June 30, 2014) and under, of all genres and cultures from Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Washtenaw Counties. Performers and singers of all musical backgrounds – whether accomplished from years of classical training or more of a homegrown star-in-the-making – are encouraged and welcomed to enter.
“Sphinx Stars: Detroit is a winning program across the board,” explains Dworkin. “The young competitors get a chance to display their abilities, Sphinx continues its efforts to showcase and celebrate diversity in the greater Detroit area, audiences experience a great show, and don’t forget, some incredibly talented young musician will go home with $10,000!”
To enter, musicians that meet the requirements must submit a three- to five-minute video audition by the new deadline of Feb. 1, 2014. All of the eligibility requirements, submission details and uploading instructions are available at www.SphinxStars.org. There is a $15 application fee, which can be waived, if needed, by simply submitting an email request. Additionally, anyone unable to prepare a video submission due to lack of access to technology, can contact the Sphinx office to make special audition arrangements.
From the open audition process, a group of nine finalists will be chosen to perform live on the Sphinx Stars: Detroit finale, to be aired in spring 2014 on Detroit Public Television. The televised finale will feature a panel of industry-leading judges, helmed by Grammy-winning renowned instrumentalist, Branford Marsalis. The grand prize winner will be chosen live and presented the $10,000 cash prize. Additionally, the winner and all of the finalists will receive ongoing performance, mentoring and professional development opportunities with Sphinx.
“We know metro Detroit is full of talented young people dreaming of a future in music,” continued Dworkin. “We can’t wait to discover these incredible talents and help share them with our communities.”
