After Wife's Fatal Accident, a Plan to Save Others

Brent Maupin wants to ban right turns when the traffic lights are red at Haggerty Road and Michigan Avenue.

He plans to fight for that after funeral services this week for his wife, Elizabeth Maupin, 27. She died after being struck by a Jeep while walking her bike from the west side of Haggerty to the east side just before 8:30 p.m. Thursday. The identity of the Jeep's driver, a 49-year-old Canton woman, has not been released by .

Initial police reports indicate that neither drugs nor alcohol were a factor. Brent Maupin said he visited the scene of the accident with police and watched traffic. He said drivers typically look left, toward oncoming Michigan Avenue traffic, but not to the right, where pedestrians and bicyclists would cross Haggerty on a marked trail.

After this week, Maupin said, he wants to start a petition to make crossing Haggerty safer for bicyclists and pedestrians by banning right-hand turns when traffic lights are red.
