Canton Baseball Diamonds Get Face Lifts

Baseball fields at Griffin Park and Pioneer Middle School received major renovations this month thanks to a generous donation.

Two of the baseball diamonds at Griffin Park have undergone a notable transformation this month, thanks to a donation from a local athletics group.

The project, overseen by the Great Canton Youth Baseball Softball Association (GCYBSA), resurfaced two of the three baseball diamonds at the park with Dura Edge materials to make for a better experience during play.

These new field materials replace the existing slag substances previously utilized and will provide better conditions for pitching, hitting, fielding and running for players. In addition, these new materials mimic the look and feel of many college and Major League Baseball fields.

Working in partnership with Canton Township, Plymouth Township and the Plymouth-Canton School District, GCYBSA has been able to fund several renovation and maintenance projects at the facilities and fields it utilizes in the Canton community.

Over the last eight years, Great Canton Youth Baseball Softball Association has offered programs to over 2,200 youth players providing low cost, high value programs. These field improvements are just one example of the many projects undertaken by GCYBSA in the community to help provide durable playing surfaces for area athletes.

An additional joint field renovation project is also currently underway at Pioneer Middle School for baseball field improvements.

“All of the Griffin Park renovations are a welcome improvement to our recreational fields in our community,” said Abe Vinitski, Canton Parks and Sports Supervisor. “It’s great to be able to work cooperatively with area user groups on targeted projects. This 27-acre park remains a popular destination for baseball and softball players who will definitely notice improvement of play.”
