Canton Seniors Celebrate St. Pat's Early

Canton Leisure Services' Senior Program celebrates St. Patrick's Day with youthful vigor

The Canton Seniors Program hosted its annual St. Pat's Day Party on Wednesday. The festivities took place in the ballroom at the Summit on the Park, where more than 150 seniors gathered -- replete in varous shades of green attire -- for an afternoon of food and fun.

The event began at noon with a lunch buffet of corned beef and cabbage, chicken picatta, redskin-mashed potatoes, and mixed vegetables. A large dessert table offered fresh baked pies, including apple, cherry and lemon meringue (alongside silver bowls of caramel sauce and green whipped cream).

"The food is delicious," said Yvonne Amersheck, who said she looks forward each year to the party. "The corned beef is great this year."

Around 1 p.m. Irish folk singer Peter Fetter took to the microphone with his accoustic guitar, playing a variety of traditional Irish songs. Two-by-two, attendees were drawn out onto the dance floor by Fetter's upbeat rhythms. Showing off their spry moves, they shuffled from one side of the floor to the other -- dipping and spinning to rounds of applause.

"It's not formal," said Senior Specialist Susan Daughty. "It's pretty laid back. They just like to get dressed up and come out to have fun."

Later in the afternoon, Irish dancers from Plymouth's O'Hare School of Irish Dance performed. To the beat of fiddles and bagpipes, the young girls in brightly accented ruffled skirts bounced and twirled in succession, kicking up their heals and rapping their tap shoes against the wood floor.

A cash bar served soda, draft beer and cocktails. There was also a raffle and a 50/50 drawing.

"We're lucky to have the Summit," said Amersheck, a longtime Canton resident. Dave Gondoly, also from Canton, concurred: "This is definitely the best place for senior citizens in the area."
