The Canton community will once again honor the memory and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. with a special tribute on Monday at The Village Theater at Cherry Hill.

The public is invited to attend a pre-event meet and greet with the keynote speaker, Alexander Jefferson, Lt. Col. (Ret) of the Tuskegee Airmen, Detroit Chapter, being held next door to the theater at the newly opened 502 Grill starting at 5 p.m.

A punch and cookie reception will begin at The Village Theater at 5:30 p.m., followed by the main program slated to start at 6 p.m.

The program will feature actor Stan Jordan delivering the powerful “I Have A Dream” Speech. Musical performances will also be provided by the New Hope Music Academy, under the direction of Isaac Pippen and soloist, Alicia Dent. The Canton Police Honor Guard, PCEP Step Team and tap dancer, Kelsey Rose, will round out the program.

This year, area youth shared their thoughts and ideas about the life and legacy of Dr. King by submitting over 100 essays and artwork, which will be on display during this special event.

Winners of this year’s art and essay contests include:
  • Elementary School: Courtney Jordan (essay), Jordan Vidojevski (art)
  • Middle School: Sanya Wadhwa (essay), Sarah Rowe (art)
  • High School: Tiffany Askew (essay), Sapphire Jackson (art)
This annual event is presented by the Canton Commission for Culture, Arts, and Heritage, members of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Sub-Committee, and Canton Township.
