Southeast Michigan is under a winter storm watch Saturday night through late Sunday night that could dump up to a foot of snow in some areas, the National Weather Service advises.

A narrow band of light to moderate snow is expected as a cold front settles over the area Saturday night into Sunday morning with little or no break in the snowfall. Then, as the storm strengthens, it will bring heavy snowfall to the area on Sunday with up to an inch an hour possible.

The Weather Service said storm accumulations of 6 to 12 inches are possible before the snow tapers off Sunday night, with the highest amounts expected over the southern and eastern portions of an area that includes Genesee, Huron, Lapeer, Lenawe, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Saginaw, Sanilac, Shiawassee, St. Clair, Tuscola, Washtenaw and Wayne counties.

Then, get ready for the big chill as the coldest air to affect Southeast Michigan in several years filters into the area. Wind chills will drop quickly below zero Sunday afternoon into Sunday night, with values to -10 to -20 below zero during the watch period.

Monday and Tuesday, it could feel as cold as -45 degrees below zero.

Those planning to travel this weekend should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to adjust plans accordingly, the Weather Service advised.
