Five Things You Need to Know June 30, 2011

A tax break for the overdue; live free music and holiday closings.

1. Today is the last day to get your Michigan Tax Amnesty form in the mail. This is a chance to have any penalties waived as you correct unpaid or delinquent state taxes, with interest, in full for return periods before Dec. 31, 2009. The state's amnesty announcement promised "all excuses welcome" for income; Michigan business; single business; sales and use; withholding; tobacco; and motor fuel taxes. Mail payments with the amnesty form (available online). Under this program, taxpayers skip penalties that could total 25 percent or more of the taxes due, and avoid civil or criminal prosecution. 4. , including the police department's records section, is closed Friday as part of a scheduled furlough day. Township employees are off work without pay as part of a negotiated budget cut. The administration remains closed on Monday, which is a paid holiday. Township offices resume normal hours beginning at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
