Flipping, Over Pancakes, for a Cause

The scent of hotcakes drew a steady line of people away from their Canton Farmers Market errands into the Cady Boyer barn Sunday.

The Cherry Hill Village Homeowners Association sponsors children's activities each year. To pay for supplies and events, the association started hosting a pancake breakfast each year at Canton's Farmers Market.

On Sunday, the association hosted its second annual breakfast at the Cady Boyer barn, featuring the company it hired last year, Chris Cakes of Michigan.

Pancake flipper Trevor Muir delighted children and adults alike with his cake-throwing skills.

Kristen Truong, a Cherry Hill Village resident and member of the homeowners association, said she hopes  the breakfast becomes a new tradition in Canton Township.

It's an idea that Cherry Hill  Village resident Crystal Worthem may support, judging from her reaction Sunday. Worthem caught her breakfast on a paper plate and walked away laughing.

"This is so fun," she said. "I didn't know there would be flying pancakes!"

Muir also elicited giggles from Canton residents Kendall Paz, 9, and her mom Lynn Paz, who said it was their first experience with flying pancakes. The scent of hotcakes seemed to draw a steady line of hungry people away from their farmers market errands into the Cady Boyer barn.

Truong said she hoped the event would raise $400 or better. Final figures weren't available by deadline; the money would pay for family-friendly social events, such as an annual picnic in July, Truong said.

"I have to give huge praise to (Canton Township Leisure Services). They set up the tables and chairs, and they are letting us use the barn for free," Truong said.

Chris Cakes is an Iowa-based chain and Muir, who lives in Clare, said he has traveled as far as St. Louis, MO, to serve the flying pancakes. Muir also serves the breakfast at his church in Clare and for sports groups. He said his favorite part of the job is "meeting a lot of people. It's fun."
