Interfaith Communities Gather During Ramadan

Canton Muslims want people to feel welcome at mosque.

In an effort to bring the Canton community together this Ramadan, the Muslim Community of Western Suburbs (MCWS) mosque is hosting a light dinner and get together at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 17.

“It’s a meet and greet. We’re just looking for people to know each other,” said Christina Rountree, board member of the outreach committee of MCWS, the committee organizing the event.

The program titled “Ramadan: Food To My Soul” will start with a short presentation on Ramadan followed by a communal breaking of fast or iftar, outreach committee members said. Muslims observe the month of Ramadan (the holiest days observed in Islam) fast during the daylight hours and break their fast at dusk, which will be around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Rountree said the event is intended to bring together Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Muslims and others.

Guests will also be given a tour, a chance to see how Muslims pray and time to talk and ask questions. Rountree said the outreach committee does not want guests to feel they have to bring anything or fast that day.

“We’re not really asking people to fast. We’re not asking people to wear hijab. We’re just asking that they come,” she said.

Since Islam is a multicultural faith, the light dinner will feature international foods including Chinese and Ethiopian cuisine, Rountree said.

“Ramadan: Food To My Soul” is at 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday, at the Muslim Community of Western Suburbs mosque basement, 40440 Palmer Road. Readers can call Syed Karamatullah at 248-703-1881 or Christina Rountree at 248-413-7520 with any questions.
