More Than 900 Turn Out for 9th Annual Turkey Trot

Canton's Turkey Trot for a Cause help fund research on epilepsy.

Some ran, some walked, but all of the 930 participants in Canton's 9th Annual Turkey Trot for a cause shared a mission: raising money to support epilepsy research.

The fun run, founded by Michael and Terri Murray after their son was diagnosed with epilepsy, attracts runners from several states.

Top female finishers included overall winner Danielle Kanclerz, 18, of Ypsilanti, who finished in 19:53.5; followed by 18 and under winner Autumn Burin, 17, of Canton, in 20:05.6 6. Declan Murray, 20, of Strongsville OH, was top overall male finisher with a time of 15:44.8 and Zane Berlanga, 16, of Canton, who led the 18-and-under males with a time of 17:15.5.

Berlanga said it was not his best time but he enjoyed the event. Full results and times are on runmichigan.com.

Part of the event includes awaress work by advocate and registered nurse Cindy Handford, a Canton native. She said epilepsy is a common brain disorder which causes seizures and that one of the biggest misconceptions is that it is a mental disorder.

November is National Epilepsy Awareness Month; nearly 3 million people (about one in every 100) have some form of epilepsy which is caused by a disruption in the brain's electrical signals. Among the causes: head injuries, brain tumors, strokes, certain viral infections, and prenatal or birth difficulty can increase the risk of developing seizures, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
