LED holiday lighting — funded by DDA and local businesses — to spruce up trees downtown.

Downtown might look a little brighter this holiday season.

A public-private partnership between the Plymouth Downtown Development Authority and local businesses has funded the installation of new LED holiday lights downtown.

According to John Buzuvis, director of business operations and special projects for the DDA, the project came with a price tag of $25,000, funded by local businesses and the DDA.

Holiday Lighting Service, based in Manchester, MI, has been installing the lights in about 30 trees downtown during the past week.

Tom Kladzyk of Holiday Lighting Service said the LED bulbs on the holiday lights are less maintenance-intensive and last much longer than traditional holiday lights. He estimated a life of about five years for the new lights, which will remain on the trees year-round.

Buzuvis said the ultimate plan is to decorate each tree downtown with the new lights, but this provides a start for beautifying the area for the holidays.

Unlike many LED lights, Kladzyk said, the LED lights downtown won't have a blue hue. It will have a soft amber color, he said, like traditional clear bulbs.
