There is a change going on in the gardening world that is fabulous and fun! Historically, gardeners would separate their vegetable garden from their flower and ornamental plant gardens. We would see the flowers and ornamental plants up and front and the vegetable gardens tucked away in the far corner of the backyard. Now we are seeing people mixing it up! Adding a bit of interesting texture with plants such as Rhubarb and Asparagus right in with the flowers. One lovely benefit of this trend is that mixing vegetables and herbs with flowers can increase garden yields and flower production. Flowers boost nectar production, attracting more beneficial insects that protect edible plants and pollinator that increase flower production.
When adding edible landscape plants to flower gardens, consider the overall look and feel of each plant and choose those that complement one another as well as those sharing the same growing requirements. Some are sun worshipers while others flourish in shade. Some need considerably less water while others need significant amounts of water. For best results, make sure when mixing vegetables and herbs with flowers, they are in the same beds as those that flourish with the same conditions.
Some vegetables to consider are Rhubarb, Peppers and Asparagus to fill in empty areas or borders of flower beds, as well as herbs such as Parsley and Basil. Looking for some fun ground cover? Try Thyme, Mint or Oregano. Want to add a beautiful scent? Lavender, Sage and Bee Balm are perfect.
