Record Geeks Unite at the 88.1 The Park Record, CD and Music Memorabilia Show

88.1 The Park hosts its fifth annual Record/CD/Music Memorabilia Show on Saturday, Feb. 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Salem High School Cafeteria.

If we are honest we all have something we're geeky about.  Our friends on "The Big Bang Theory" like comic books and Star Trek action figures. Some people are foodies and others geek out on classic cars.

Hi, my name is Bill and I'm a record geek.  I know half the battle is admitting it.  I'm not sure if they have a fun name for record geeks but I know where other record geeks like to hang out. You can find them at record stores and record shows.

I know I feel like I'm among my tribe when I'm at a record show.  Sure, I love looking through stacks and stacks of old vinyl and CDs, but I also enjoy camaraderie that comes with talking about music.

That is part of the reason that 88.1 The Park started the annual Record/CD/Music Memorabilia Show.  This year's show will take place on Saturday Feb. 23, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Salem High School Cafeteria.

This year's show is our fifth and it should be our best yet. I'm pretty excited because we will have a record number of dealers at this year's show.  We will have 40+ tables of CDs, records, posters, T-shirts, 45s and much more.

One of the vendors is a PCEP teacher and she will have an amazing collection of 45s for sale. She has all kinds of indie rock going back to the grunge era of Sub Pop Records. I had a chance to look through a hundred of them and saw 45s from Mudhoney, Nirvana, The Muffs, Rocket from the Crypt, Shonen Knife and so much more.  The record geek in me got more excited as I flipped from record to record.  She will have close to 1,000 records available.

The record show is a fundraiser for our student radio program.  Admission is $3, $5 for early admission (9 a.m.-10 a.m.).  Best of all PCEP students can get in for free with a student ID.

What will I be looking for this year?  I don't have a must have item but I'm sure to come home with something. Somehow I'll convince my wife that I just had to have it.

So record geeks of Southeast Michigan unite and stop by the 88.1 The Park Record/CD/Music Memorabilia Show on Saturday.  We can debate whether Air Supply is a worthy guilty pleasure, and look for some bargains too.
