Maggie 2.0

The new year brings new opportunities for hosting an exchange student this fall as Maggie is nearly halfway through her stay in the USA.

It has been a while since we last blogged about our Polish exchange student Maggie, with the holidays and all. Things are going along swimmingly. Maggie enjoyed the US version of the "holidays" (especially her singing Justin Beiber toothbrush gift!)  and once again is immersed in school and sports after a nice two week break. Her Salem girls gymnastics team is undefeated (as of this writing) with two important meets coming up soon. Go Rocks!

The new year also brings information from YFU (Youth For Understanding) the organization that sponsores Maggie and other exchange students in the US. Prospective students are now available (with more on the way) for the upcoming school year. If you think you might be interested in hosting an exchange student, check out the YFU USA homepage for more information. It is a very special opportunity to learn another culture and be an important part of a students life for the next year.

We are currently reviewing student applications for Maggie 2.0. This is not to imply that our next student will be an upgrade over Maggie, rather that Maggie having been the first student we hosted, will always be "special" to us. We are allowed to look at prospective students biographies and a personal letter that they have written to prospective host parents. This letter is a personal slice of themselves, allowing us a look inside. Unlike the NFL draft, there is no exchange student combine where we can time them in such events as getting ready in the morning, doing homework, showering, cleaning their room, chores or other such activities!

We are already closing in on our Maggie 2.0. Once confirmed, she will have a name and a place in our family for the next school year. We will then be in contact and can start getting to know each other before her arrival in late summer. Until then its gymnastics, school, spring and then graduation and home. Footloose and Toast will miss Maggie, but have "friended' her on Dogbook. (a cool Facebook app for your dog LOL). She may leave but will never be gone.
