Tax Day: Obama's Favorite Holiday

Not So Fun Fact: The national debt is somewhere in the neighborhood of 17 trillion dollars. If you tried to count that high, managing one number per second, it would take you over 500,000 years to do it.

So it's tax day. The day that all Americans make good on their promise to our government to pay our fair share, and fund the good things that our elected leaders deem appropriate. It is a solemn promise, and we are held to this promise by the Internal Revenue Service. We are held to this promise by the threat of having our wages garnished, liens put on our houses, and even the threat of jail.

Make no mistake, Americans must keep this one promise above all others. If there is one efficient agency in government, it is the IRS. Those folks strike fear in darn near everybody. When the Feds couldn't take down Al Cappone, they turned the IRS onto him, and the next thing you know, the man is in jail.

How are they able to do these things? It's the tax code. The tax code is so ridiculously complicated, that nobody can truly figure it out. If the IRS wants to get you, they will surely find a mistake if they look hard enough, and go back for enough years. They have that right. These days, they are abusing that right way too often.

I want to deal with just a couple issues here on tax day, one that has been going on for a little over a year, and one that just came to light.

The first involves the IRS targeting conservative groups, namely 501C3 non-profit groups. It seems that for some reason the Democrats hate these people, because they get too involved in elections, and draw in a lot of money. Kind of sounds like a union if you ask me. The SEIU, AFL-CIO, pick the letters, they all fit.

Well the Dems went to court over these various conservative groups, and tried to shut things down. They went to the Supreme Court, and lost. You would think it would be over at that point. Not so. It seems that a certain Congressman, named Elijah Cummings decided to go off the reservation, and sent an email to the good folks at the IRS asking for the tax information of a group called True The Vote.

True The Vote is a group founded by a woman named Catherine Engelbrecht in Texas, and their stated purpose was to stop voter fraud. They applied for tax exempt status. Rep. Cummings, and every other Democrat on the planet feels threatened by this group, so they have done everything in their power to stop them. Soon the IRS became involved, thanks to Cummings, and they went after True The Vote.

According to Engelbrecht, "We applied for nonprofit C-3 status early in 2010," she went on to say, "Since that time the IRS has run us through a gauntlet of analysts and hundreds of questions over and over again. They've requested to see each and every tweet I've ever tweeted or Facebook post I've ever posted. They also asked to know every place I've ever spoken since our inception and to whom, and everywhere I intend to speak in the future.” Engelbrecht claims that, "The IRS treatment of us lends to the appearance of a politically motivated abuse of power and an assault on free speech."

So the accusation is that the IRS unfairly targeted this group, as well as a couple hundred others. Congress hauled Lois Lerner, who was in charge of this area at the IRS, to testify. Lois Lerner not once, but twice, excercized her 5th ammendment right against self incrimination, and refused to answer questions.

If Cummings actually did request private tax information from True The Votem, that would be illegal, and if Lois Lerner actually provided private tax information, that would be every bit as criminal. Well, Cummings went right in front of the TV cameras, and denied requesting private tax information. So if Cunmings didn't do anything illegal, and if Lerner didn't do anything illegal, why on Earth does she need to plead the 5th?

Turns out there is a pretty damning email that came to light last week, and it has Lois Lerner's name on it, and it has Elijah Cummings fingerprints all over it. You of course will hear nothing about this on the mainstream news outlets. Cummings was on Face The Nation this past weekend, and not one single question from Obama's lapdog poodle, Bob Schieffer.

Back during the Nixon days, the media at least made an effort to hide their lberal bias, now days they wear it like a badge of honor. Same holds true for the IRS. When Nixon tried to use the IRS against his political enemies, they refused, and they blew the whistle. Now days, they are merely another arm of Obama For America, proudly wearing Elect Obama stickers right in their offices. Yes, this happened.

Bottom line is that if you are a conservative group, that has the words Patriot, Liberty, or the biggie, Tea Party in your name, you can expect to be targeted by the IRS. You can also expect multiple government agencies to come knocking at your door to harrass you, and then of course, leave your tax exempt application sitting somewhere on a desk with a bullseye drawn on it.

If on the other hand, your name is Media Matters For America, which is a group with the sole purpose of destroying Fox News, and funded by that whackjob George Soros, you will promptly get your tax exempt status approved, and access to the White House to boot.

The last thing I will share with you on tax day is another bizarre example of the heavy handed Obama Administration, and it's out of control, money hungry agencies.

In 2011, congress quietly passed legislation that lifted the 10 year statute of limitations on money owed to the government. This was attached to a farm bill of all things, and it went unnoticed. Until now. It seems that now, our heavy handed feds can actually come after the children of parents who may have been overpaid by the US government.

Here is a real scenario. The government overpays a disability payment to your parent 40 years ago. Not your fault, not your parent's fault, other than they cashed the check. You get a letter from the government in the envelope that your income tax refund was supposed to be in. It tells you that your parent got a larger disablity payment in 1976 that they were entitled to, and because of that, your income tax refund has been seized by the IRS.

You have no recourse, because it has already been decided by a government panel. They don't have to prove anything to you in order for them to seize your refund. They don't even have to have the original document. The only requirement for the governmental agency is that they send a letter to the last kown address of the person in question. Well if the issue is 30 or 40 years old, that person may be dead, or may not have lived at the address for years. So how can they fight this, if they never received notification from the agency involved? The next of kin is automatically responsible, and it can go all the way back to grandchildren.

This is going to court in one case, and it involves a woman named Mary Grice, whose father died when she was 4 years old in 1977, leaving her mother with five children. Thirty-seven years later, the Social Security administration is claiming that it overpaid someone in her family, but it isn't sure whom, and is going after Ms. Grice for the alleged debt. She is suing. What are her chances against the Social Security Administration and the IRS? Just ask Al Cappone.

Will this mess eventually get fixed? Yes, most likely, because it got covered by folks like Fox News. It got covered, and it is embarrassing. The Obama administration is blaming congress, and congress is blaming the White House. The problem is that while those two are busy pointing fingers, the IRS is still busy seizing refund checks from Americans that sorely need that money. The biggest problem is that the government never had a right to involve children in the debt of their parents to begin with.

So in the end, we have an out of control President, supporting out of control government agencies, and the out of control IRS is the hatchet man for both.

I am reminded of a speech that Dr. Benjamin Carson made at the National Prayer Breakfast a year ago. That was the very same speech that apparently offended President Obama so much that folks in the White House called Dr. Carson and demanded that he apologize to the President.

In his speech, Dr. Carson spoke of the tax code, and offered this story. He spoke of Cristianity, and he brought up the subject of tithes. Of course he wasn't endorsing them for the tax code, but he put it this way. He said that when thinking of taxation, he looked to the bible, and to the fairest man in the universe, God. “He didn't say that if your crops failed you didn't have to give him tithe, and he didn't say that if you had a bumper crop that you had to give him triple tithe.” It's all about proportion. Carson went on, “Say you make 10 billion dollars in a year, you pay 1 billion, you make 10 dollars, and you pay a buck., of course you gotta get rid of the loopholes.”

He went on to say that “ There are folks that will say that it doesn't hurt the guy who makes 10 billion as much as it hurts the guy who makes 10 dollars, but why do you have to hurt the other guy? He just gave 1 billion dollars. Who says you have to hurt anybody?” Sure, it seems simplistic, but I get his point.

In closing I will just say this. As Americans we are not asked, but told to keep our yearly tax promise to our government. If we don't, our wages can and will be garnished, leins can and will be put on our property, and the IRS can and will throw us in jail. Don't you wish that politicians were held to the same standards?

Don't you wish that when Obama promised that if we liked our doctor, we could keep our doctor, he was held to the same standards as we are for our taxes? When he ran for President he said that national healthcare wasn't a new tax. When it was challenged at the Supreme Court though, he was more than happy to call it a tax, in order to win the case.

Now Obamacare is the law of the land, and if you don't pay your Obamacare tax, who is going to hunt you down? Who is going to seize your tax refund? Obama's IRS is going to be the enforcement arm of Obamacare.

Happy Tax Day Everybody....
