The Michigan Philharmonic Performs "An American Salute" At Kellogg Park

The Michigan Philharmonic will perform "An American Salute" on Saturday, June 28th, at 7:30 PM at Kellogg Park in Downtown Plymouth

The Fourth of July festivities officially begin this Saturday night at Kellogg Park in downtown Plymouth. The Michigan Philharmonic will present An American Salute, a concert of patriotic songs, mixed with other favorites that all generations will enjoy.

This is the fourth year for An American Salute, and it has become a favorite of residents in our community. There are about 4000 folks expected to enjoy the Philharmonic, led by Nan Washburn, who is the Music Director, and Conductor.

This show is the brainchild of Nan Washburn and Beth Stewart, who is in her 6th year as the Executive Director of the Michigan Philharmonic. Mrs. Stewart said that, “We had always wanted to do an outdoor show, and we felt that with Kellogg Park being such a great destination, and having such a great reputation for good music, it was a perfect fit for us.”

With the vision clear, Beth and Nan set forth and sought the funding, and sorted out all of the many details, and things fell into place. Beth indicated that “This show is a great tribute for our veterans, and an entertaining night for our community, and we are happy to do it.” The Plymouth Downtown Development Authority, The Wilcox Foundation, and Biggby Coffee are among the donors responsible for making this event possible.

Among the honored attendees will be Les Croyle, who is the State Commander of the VFW. The State VFW Honor Guard will present our nation's colors. Other honored guests will include members of the Plymouth VFW Post 6695, and Plymouth-Canton Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 528.

Another important thing will be a table set up and manned by our veterans. They are taking donations of athletic socks as part of a program called Stand Down. Stand Down is a program that assists homeless veterans, and the thing they need right now is socks. If you can bring a 3-pack or 6-pack of athletic crew socks and drop them off at the Stand Down table, that would be a great thing to do. The show is free, so maybe you could consider the socks kind of a price for admission.

The music will consist of a wide variety of patriotic favorites with the official songs of the five branches of the military, and Stars And Stripes Forever, as well as music from movie hit Forrest Gump, and the theme from Band of Brothers. The arrangements will go from Louis Armstrong all the way up to Journey. One of the expected highlights will be the 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky. A wide variety of music for every generation.

This event will take place at 7:30 PM on Saturday, June 28th at Kellogg Park. I would suggest you show up early, so you do not miss one minute of this wonderful show.
