You Can Fight Childrens Cancer At The St. Baldrick's Head Shaving Event

There is a wonderful event coming up in Plymouth. The annual St. Baldrick's event to conquer childhood cancer is being held at the Plymouth Roc, on May 18, 2014. At this event, participants agree to get their heads shaved, and supporters agree to donate some money to this organization in order to laugh at said participants, and help stamp out childhood cancer, all at the same time.

This event will also have many fun things besides the shaving of the heads, and you do not have to have your head shaved to come out and have some fun. There will be raffles for items donated from places like Dean Sadler Salon, Salon Awesome, Busch's, A&E Jewelry, Residence Inn and I AM DETROIT clothing. Other fun things are, 50/50 drawing, photo booth, kid's games, and food and drink specials. This all runs from 1:00 to 5:00 PM.

It should be noted that 1 in 5 children diagnosed with cancer in the United States, will not survive, and of those that do survive, 2 out of 3 will suffer long-term effects from treatment. St. Baldrick's is determined to change those numbers. They are determined to conquer childhood cancer.

Before I move on to the ridiculous picture you can find of me at the top of this story, I want to say this. Unfortunately, we always have to take a good look these days at the charities we choose to help. Too many of them have extremely high overhead costs, with little money actually going directly towards those we wanted to help. St. Baldrick's is not one of those organizations. Only 2.8% of general St. Baldrick's finances go towards management/general fund. So 97% of the money you contribute will go directly towards helping our children who are fighting cancer.

Having said that, I am going from being a small donor in the last event, to being a participant at this year's event. A gentleman named Eric Bacyinski is the event coordinator, and this is not his first go round handling this. This is Eric's 4th year organizing this event with Robb Drzewicki, and they are getting help from Tabitha Lyngvar as well. Eric is a stand up guy, and I am happy to support his efforts.

While I have been fortunate never to have had my family touched by cancer, I have a very good friend whose life was touched, and with Carolynn, who is the most courageous person I know, in my mind, I decided this was the least I could do to support such a great cause.

Knowing that I was going to participate in this event, Eric, and my friend Johnny McKay double dog dared me to go without a haircut until this event happens on May 18th. This dare was made a month or so ago, and I am at the point now, that I have an angry girlfriend, and have to wear a hat every time I leave the house. Curse you Eric & Johnny!

So here is the bottom line. I am going to create my own Plymouth-Canton Patch team, and call it Bryan Bentley-Patch Fights Cancer. If you go to my page, and make a donation, I will make sure that you receive a cool Patch tote bag, or a high quality Patch baseball cap for the summer.

In a really cool twist, the first two donations of $50 or more will have the pleasure of having their initials (2 letters only) shaved onto the side of my head by the good folks at Plymouth's Fantastic Sams. The picture will be posted for posterity, here at Patch for your comedic pleasure.

Todd & Scott Wells are the owners of Fantastic Sams here in Plymouth, and with a mischievous grin, said that they could handle any initials that needed to be shaved onto the side of my head. These two brothers donate their time, money, and equipment for this event, and are just really solid community citizens. So, if you want to help in the fight against childhood cancer, and get a good laugh at me, I would be grateful for your donation. Be it $5, $10, $20, or even $50 or more, there will be something for you. The Patch hats are really cool, making me your personal billboard would be even cooler.

You can find my donation page here---->  http://www.stbaldricks.org/participants/mypage/679100/2014

I will add that there are 68 folks, including 11 women, are already signed up, and willing to shave their heads to fight childrens cancer, so you are not limited to donating to my team.

So far, $17,000 has already been raised for this event, and Mr. Bacyinski is hoping to see it go much higher.

The Plymouth Roc is located at 1020 Ann Arbor Road, in Plymouth.
