American Coney Island to Open Canton Location This Weekend

New location to offer free coneys to first 50 visitors on Saturday.

American Coney Island, which claims to be home of the original Detroit Coney Dog, will open a new restaurant in Canton on Jan. 12, according to a news release.

The new location, at 44532 Michigan Ave., will feature a 50-seat restaurant where diners can eat in, carry-out or drive-thru, the first for the family-owned restaurant chain, the news release indicated.

Serving up traditional coney dogs, the restaurant will also offer other American Coney Island menu favorites such as Greek salad, spinach pie and baklava.

As part of the grand opening celebration, American Coney Island will offer free coney hot dogs to the first 50 customers (one per person) beginning at 9 a.m. and 99-cent coneys from 2-3 p.m. on Jan. 12, according to the news release.

In addition, for each coney purchased, customers will be entered into a drawing for a chance win a free coney hot dog a week for 52 weeks, with a drawing held at 11 p.m.

“Customers have asked us for years to open another American Coney Island in the metro Detroit area and the timing and location for this new restaurant in Canton was ideal,” Grace Keros, third-generation owner of American Coney Island, said in the news release. “While our original downtown location will always be a destination spot for our loyal coney fans, we are looking forward to serving the Canton and surrounding communities.”

In the past several years, the 95-year-old iconic family-owned American Coney Island has expanded to the Detroit Zoo, Ford Field, and most recently opened its first out-of-state location in The D Las Vegas Hotel and Casino.

The new restaurant will open 8 a.m. on Jan. 12 and hours of operation will be Sunday through Wednesday, 7 a.m.-10 p.m., and Thursday through Saturday 7 a.m.-midnight. 

American Coney Island wdas founded in Detroit by Gust Keros in 1917, and its location at 114 W. Lafayette in downtown Detroit,] has been owned by three generations of the Keros Family: Gust, his son Charles and today, Charles’ daughter Grace is the first woman owner.
