Bites Nearby: Bode's Corned Beef House

Plymouth's diner serves great American fare.

The American diner has always served up the best in simple, down-home fare. The coffee is always hot, the griddle is always sizzling with eggs and burgers, and the fryers pop with battered cod and onion rings. It’s a historic institution, one with deep roots in communities far and wide.

In Plymouth, is one of these American diner institutions. Just outside of downtown on Plymouth Road, this quaint and idyllic restaurant is a throwback to Plymouth’s beginnings – when it was the Bode Hotel. It was taken over in 1959 by its current owners, Pam and Richard Meacham, and has since flourished.

Atmosphere: Outside, Bode’s resembles an English pub. It is situated along the railroad tracks that cross Main Street as it winds out of downtown Plymouth and toward the Old Village. Inside, it’s all diner; a snaking counter greets visitors as they walk through the door, flanked by a row a four booths. Beyond, an open doorway invites customers into the restaurant’s back room, which lays out widely with numerous booths and tables.

Food: Bode’s has some of the best corned beef in Michigan this side of Zingerman’s Deli in Ann Arbor, and the menu embraces it. Their corned beef sandwiches are tall and robust, and their corned beef and cabbage is melt-in-your-mouth good. Like any diner, Coney dogs and sandwiches are in no short supply, and the breakfast menu is full of the favorites.

Prices: To say the cost of dining at Bode’s is modest is to overstate the case. A 1/3 pound burger is $2.35, fish sandwich is $3.95 and a BLT is just $5.15. Specialty sandwiches range in from $6 to $6.60 and salads are between $5 and $6. Omelets start at $4.55 for a cheese and range up to $5.95 for a Spanish omelet.
