Canton Township hosted its second Winter Farmers Market of the year on Sunday, an event that drew a stronger than expected crowd despite a few obstacles.
The overnight time change, a late decision to relocate the event due to wet conditions at Preservation Park and less than ideal temperatures did appear to slightly hamper attendance. But Tina Lloyd farmers market manager for Canton Leisure Services, said she wa pleased with the turnout.
“I think it went well,” she said of the day, which drew 422 people, 128 shy of its record of 55o, set last month. “It was a little lighter than usual, probably due to the time change and the relocation. But it was still a great day."
Numerous purveyors of Michigan-made products were on hand, with booths set up to display their products. A variety of meats, breads, pastas, cheeses and even soaps lined the roughly 20 vendor tables at the historic Cherry Hill School at the corner of Cherry Hill and Ridge roads.
Among the vendors at the market were Canton-based Boblin Honey, Boyer's Meat Processing and the Day Dream Cafe. Also represented were Plymouth's Natural Local Food Delivery and the Plymouth Popcorn Company.
“We came to farmers markets every weekend last year,” said Canton resident Stacey McCarthy, who was with her husband Jim and their son Nolan, 9. She said that one of the main reasons they keep coming back every year are the products they have gotten used to, such as fresh cheeses, local meats and pastries.
The next Winter Farmers Market is Sunday, April 10, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Beginning in May, the markets will be held every Sunday through October, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
