Dave and Marlene's Produce Remains A Familiar Face At Plymouth Farmers Market

Local couple has been part of the Plymouth Farmers Market since the beginning, considers other vendors members of their family

Sometimes, it's all about the location.

Consider the prime piece of farmer's market real estate occupied by Dave and Marlene O'Brien, who have been selling Michigan-grown produce on or around the same spot for more than 30 years.

Their produce stand, a staple at the Plymouth Farmers market, is situated at one of the spots located inside at the Gathering in downtown Plymouth. Holding down such a spot is reserved for those vendors who were among the first to participate in the market when it first opened in 1980.

Since then, Marlene O'Brien has seen vendors come and go. But there are still plenty of familiar faces.

"Every Saturday is like a family gathering," O'Brien said.

The O'Briens work with growers statewide, re-selling several variety of vegetables throughout the farmer's market season depending on what is in season. Dave O'Brien makes regular visits to the Detroit produce terminal and brings it back to Plymouth where he and his wife maintain their Saturday residence.

Marlene O'Brien marvels at how much the market has changed over the years and how how popular the weekly get together has become. One thing that won't change: Where you'll find the O'Briens each week.

"We won't be giving up our spot," Marlene O'Brien said.

The Plymouth Farmers Market operates between May and October and runs each Saturday from 7:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at The Gathering in downtown Plymouth.
