'Diva Day' Kicks Off Spring Shopping Season in Downtown Plymouth

The third annual event features special discounts and prizes at local businesses.

On Saturday, the Plymouth Chamber of Commerce is encouraging downtown Plymouth visitors to act like divas for a day during the organization's third annual "Diva Day."

The day will kick off at the chamber offices on Ann Arbor Trail, where the first 500 visitors will receive a free feather boa.

From there, people can stop by the more than 30 shops and restaurants in the downtown area that will be offering discounts, raffles and special attractions between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

"The whole downtown will be overrun with women wearing boas," said event organizer Teri Fry.

She said "Diva Day" was born out of the popularity of "Ladies Night Out," another chamber shopping event which takes place in September.

"'Diva Day' is the kickoff to the warm-season shopping time," Fry said. "Business owners do look forward to the warmer months when people are out walking downtown, and this is like the start of that."

The weather on Saturday might not be exactly what people think of when they think spring, however.

According to the National Weather Service, there will be a high temperature of 45 degrees with a chance of rain.

"Weather is always an issue in April," Fry said. "But people have fun no matter what."

Sharon Pugh, owner of the home goods store , agrees.

"Rain or shine, we always have a good time," Pugh said.

Pugh wasn't ready to divulge what the store would be offering on "Diva Day," other than it would be a "funky way to get a discount." She said the store also plans a raffle drawing.

Linda Lacasse of the Old World Olive Press said the store will hold a raffle for a four-pack of the winner's choice of olive oil and vinegar, valued at $50, while That's Awesome, an accessory store on Main Street, will offer a 20 percent discount all day.
