Father Starts Foundation to Raise Awareness Following Son's Suicide

Learn more about this Plymouth-based business in this week's Small Business Spotlight.

Kevin Fischer, President of The Dominique Fischer Memorial Foundation, started his business in 2010 after the death of his son.

Fischer recently submitted information about the business to Patch. If you have a business and want to participate in Patch's Small Business Shout Out you can fill out the form here.

How did your business come to be?: After loosing my son Dominique to suicide on June 27, 2010 after his three year battle with mental illness I was compelled to establish this foundation in the memory of my child. The lack of access /awareness to treatment for mental illness has gone ignored for far too long in the US. It's not until we suffer a tragic event that we look at it and soon move on as if it never happened again, until there is another event. I begged for help to save my son's life and no one heard me until he was gone. This is unacceptable!

We are a 100% volunteer organization. All of the funds we raise are donated to others or reinvested in future events. We are a 501(c)(3). All donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

What services does your business provide?: Scholarships at Detroit Catholic Central High School, and support organizations dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families living with mental illness, suicide prevention and parents who have lost children.

What do you want your business to be best known for?: Honoring the memory of my late son by helping others with similar needs. We are dedicated to helping our community understand that a mental illness diagnosis is not a death sentence. With love, support and by following  a treatment plan many can live a very normal life. RECOVERY IS POSSIBLE!

What's your most popular product or service?: Our fund raisers are very popular. We host a variety of 4 events annually (for example a golf-a-thon, our annual golf classic, comedy for a cause and dinner at Texas de Brazil), with the hope of offering fun events people want to support and get something in return, while educating them about mental illness, suicide prevention, etc.

When was the business founded?: June 2011

Why did you choose to locate to Plymouth?: My son was primarily raise in the Plymouth-Canton area, and it is where he died. This is also a very family friendly area. What better place to establish our foundation.
