Green Street Fair Marks Fifth Anniversary in Downtown Plymouth

The eco-friendly Green Street Fair will mark a milestone when it returns to downtown Plymouth on May 4-6.

The festival, which features green-themed exhibitors and activities, is celebrating its fifth year, and the event's co-founder Raychel Rork said there are no indications of slowing down this year, projecting up to 100,000 visitors over the festival's three days.

"It's kind of shocking," she said. "(The time has) flown by. This is what we do. We don't do anything else."

She said the event takes a full year to plan, including booking musical artists and other entertainment.

"This is what we do and we love to do it," she said. "It's exciting. We're really happy it's growing every year."

This year presents a tall order for the festival, which saw huge crowds and . This year, Michigan-based rock stars the Verve Pipe headline Saturday's festivities.

Rork said there also will be local and regional bands throughout the three days.

"We try to have a mix of local artists and try to support bands that are up and coming," she said. One of those include the Kids Who Cried Wolf, a band of high-school students from Northville.

Rork said there should be plenty of activities to fit any demographic, with the green theme incorporated into exhibitors' products and activities at the event.

"Whatever you might be into, you should find something to make a greener choice in the area," she said.

New this year is a quench station where water bottles can be refilled to reduce waste and a birds of prey exhibit featuring injured predatory birds from the Wesley Science and Nature Center in Ann Arbor, Rork said.

"People can get up close and personal with exotic animals most people have never seen before, let alone in in downtown Plymouth," Rork said.
