Online Quiz Website Sporcle Buys Plymouth-Based Trivia Company

Great Lakes Trivia events in area now branded as Sporcle Live.

Online quiz website Sporcle.com has bought Plymouth-based Great Lakes Trivia, a company that conducts live trivia in Michigan, Ohio, Illinois and Minnesota, according to a newsletter sent Thursday from Great Lakes Trivia.

Beginning Jan. 7, all Great Lakes Trivia shows at local bars and establishments will be branded as Sporcle Live, the newsletter indicated.

Sporcle is a popular online quiz website launched in 2007 with offices in Seattle and San Francisco. According to its website, it averages about 9.5 million visitors per month.

Even with the new name, trivia patrons still will see familiar faces at their usual shows, however.

"While Sporcle has indeed purchase the assets of (Great Lakes Trivia), fear not, as all the MCs and (Great Lakes Trivia) staff are here to stay," the newsletter read.

According to the newsletter, patrons now have a chance to play trivia online, on their mobile device and in-person.

Mark Adams founded the company, called Motor City Trivia at the time, in Plymouth's Old Village with his family members in 2009, holding its first show at Liberty Street Brewing Company. The company can be found at several local bars, including Hermann's Olde Town Grille, CJ's Brewing Company at Compuware Arena in Plymouth, Bowery Grille and Pub in Canton, Buffalo Wild Wings in Canton and Crow's Nest in Canton.

The company, which offers team-based trivia with a live host, changed its name to Great Lakes Trivia in 2012 when it started booking locations outside of Metro Detroit. It still maintains its office at 139 W. Liberty St. in Plymouth's Old Village.

Adams said in a 2012 interview with Plymouth-Canton Patch that his company's brand of bar trivia appeals to die-hards and newcomers alike.

"It's no different than a bowling league or a softball league, but it's something where everyone can play," he said at the time. "It's a great social atmosphere."

Sporcle Live's new season begins Jan. 7, with nearly $10,000 in cash prizes available throughout Michigan and Ohio.
