Rock Bar & Grill in Downtown Plymouth Closes Doors

Sign at entrance indicates bar is closed, will reopen in February under new management.

The Rock Bar & Grill in downtown Plymouth is now closed, according to a sign posted at the front entrance of the building.

"We will reopen in February 2013 under new management," the sign read.

The bar was slated to close Feb. 1 after bar owner Kevin Montagano agreed to terms with the City of Plymouth to close the restaurant and seek new ownership in lieu of the city recommending revocation of its liquor license to the state's Liquor Control Commission after numerous liquor-related violations.

The Plymouth City Commission voted unanimously Monday in favor of the agreement after a public hearing about the fate of the bar.

Under the agreement, the bar would have to find a new owner within 90 days of Monday's public hearing in order to avoid the city proceeding with its liquor license revocation efforts.

If the bar had faced a violation in the time between Monday's hearing and Feb. 1, however, the bar would be forced to close its doors and the city would proceed with efforts to revoke its license.

It is not yet clear what circumstances led to the bar closing its doors before the Feb. 1 date. A message was left Thursday with lawyer Scott MacDonald, whose name was listed on the sign outside the bar.

Does this sudden move surprise anyone?

It seems clear that ownership decided it was not worth staying open, and risking another violation, which would cost them the liquor license. This move was purely about the sacred liquor license. The receipts for 20 days were simply not worth the risk. Smart move in my opinion...

The Rock was no different that the other Bars on Penniman Ave. I spent most of my time at the Penn Grill and saw many more incidents involving patrons there that the Rock bar ended up being cited for.
