Thank you Eriksson Elementary students and teachers!

Eriksson students wrote letters and made beautiful cards and pictures for lonely senior citizens in Michigan.

I have written blogs before about the importance of reaching out to senior citizens, especially the ones in nursing homes.  There are many seniors with families that have moved away or are busy in their own lives so that having a visitor is a rare thing.  They do not use or have access to computers, and even a phone call is often quickly forgotten.  The best way for these people to know they have not been forgotten is by sending them an actual piece of mail that they can hold, place on their nightstand, or hang on the wall.  This is something they will look at many times each day and know that someone had thought of them.

My mission for the past 5 1/2 years has been trying to send out greeting cards to senior citizens in Michigan that otherwise may not receive any mail.  With the help of many people making and donating cards, "Snail Mail For Seniors" is currently sending a piece of mail to 800 senior citizens every month.  This week I received a large amount of beautiful and creative letters and cards from kids at Eriksson Elementary School in Canton.  The seniors especially love items made by children and I know these will bring smiles to many!!  I just wish I could post pictures of all of them.  Not only is this benefitting the elderly, but it is an easy way to get children involved in helping others.  It is also great to see kids writing actual letters, instead of using computers or texting.  Thanks so much to the teachers at Eriksson for participating in this project!!!  If there are other schools or churches in the area who would like to have their students make pictures or cards for our seniors, please do so!  We do not send "get well" cards.  All items (labeled "Snail Mail") can be dropped off at the front desk of Waltonwood Carriage Park Assisted Living Home located at 2000 Canton Center Rd.  It is the smaller of the 2 buildings.  Our mailing address is: Snail Mail, P.O. Box 87491, Canton, MI  48187.

Please take a look at some of the other cards and items that have been donated from all around the country on our facebook page:  https://www.facebook.com/pages/Snail-Mail-For-Seniors/124492997569226

The feedback I receive from the staff at the 35 nursing homes we mail our cards to is heartwarming.  Many carry our cards around with them, others tell me our cards are the only thing these seniors have on their walls.  It is such an easy, inexpensive way to make someone feel special. So the next time there is an indoor recess or any free time at school, teachers please get out the crayons and paper and have your kids make us some pictures or cards!  This is a great project for scout troops also.  Our website is:  www.snailmailforseniors.com
