Salvation Army Food Pantry Would Like Your Help

There are 3 days left to donate to the Salvation Army Food Pantry's Love Thy Neighbor program, and you can make a difference to folks who are struggling.

The Salvation Army is asking community members to donate specific items to the Salvation Army Food Pantry. Some of the things that can help are deodorant and shaving items, toilet paper, body soap, dish soap, detergent, shampoo and conditioner. Food items that are in need, include Hamburger Helper, canned chicken and tuna.

For those wishing to make a donation for this program, you can call Laurie Aren at 734-453-5464, or email her at: laurie_aren@usc.salvationarmy.org

I had a nice conversation with Laurie, who is in her 8th year at the Salvation Army, and we spoke about the areas she covers, and some of the Food pantry needs. While the economy in Michigan is slowly recovering, Laurie mentioned that, there are still many folks without jobs, and there are many individuals and families that are still struggling.

The Salvation Army Plymouth serves people in Northville, Plymouth, Canton, and Belleville, and among the many things that they do, are to help provide food, and other personal care items through their Food Pantry.

While many people are getting help with food through Bridge Cards, this is often not enough to cover food needs for a whole month, and the Food Pantry works to bridge those gaps. The Bridge Cards also do not cover personal care items such as toiletries, diapers, and cleaning products such as body soap and detergent for laundry and dishes.

Laurie indicated to me that while community members are very generous with donations to charitable groups, churches, and food pantries, these organizations continue to be strained by so many in need throughout our communities.

I asked Laurie what we could do, and she said that if perhaps folks had a little left over after they had donated to their own favorite charities, maybe they could consider a contribution to the Salvation Army Plymouth.

The Salvation Army Plymouth is located at 9451 South Main Street, in Plymouth. Drop off donations are accepted Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM and from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM.

I had a look at their website, and I found a very good list of useful things that can be donated, including highlighted items that are in urgent need as well. If you are considering a donation, this list is a very useful source for making your contribution count for somebody in need.
