Trial begins for man accused in drunk-driving death of Canton woman

The man accused of killing a Canton Township woman while driving drunk began his trial Monday, according to AnnArbor.com. Bradley Howard is facing a second-degree murder charge for allegedly killing Stephanie Joyce Stone on Oct. 26, 2010, the article said.

Man pleads no contest in shooting death of Livonia cop

Terry Bowling, 49, of Detroit pleaded no contest to second-degree murder on Sept. 27 in the slaying of Livonia police officer Larry Nehasil, according to the Detroit Free Press. He had made the plea deal the day before, where he now will face up to 30 years in prison instead of a life term without parole had he gone on trial for first-degree murder, the report said.

Nehasil was killed in a shootout in Walled Lake on Jan. 17, the report said. Jan. 21 at in Plymouth.

Two girls robbed outside Westland Public Library

Two 12-year-old girls had their cell phones stolen outside Westland Public Library, 6123 Central City Parkway, at about 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 28 by a man they said had a gun, according to the Detroit Free Press. According to the article, officers caught the suspected robber at Westland Center mall, 35000 Warren Road, and another suspect a few blocks away. The report said the men had the girls' phones and one had a BB gun.

Northville Schools votes to privatize custodial services

Beginning in October, Northville Public Schools will have a privatized custodial staff, . The Board of Education voted unanimously Sept. 27 to award a contract to Grand Rapids Building Services (GRBS).
