Five Things You Need to Know August 5, 2011

1. Color Tour Jazz

The Brothers Groove (who picked up three Detroit Music Awards this year) are set to play near  from 7 to 9 tonight, the latest in Canton's Color Tour Summer Jazz Concert Series.

Canton's Downtown Development Authority color coded the Ford Road strip using leaf banners: Super Bowl in in the Purple Zone, west of Sheldon Road.

2. Home Run Derby

Eighteen athletes from area high schools will step up to home plate to test how well their bats connect with balls pitched at the Second Annual Dale A. Rumberger Home Run Derby. Sports fans, friends and family are invited to watch, starting at 11 a.m. Saturday at Salem High School’s baseball field. Proceeds benefit Bilkie Family Field, home of the — a place for children of all abilities to enjoy barrier-free baseball. The deadline to register for Miracle League's first season is Aug. 9. 3. Register Fido for Library's Best-in-Show

Today is the last day to register your dog for 's dog show, 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. Pooches will vie to be named top dog in these categories: costume, biggest, smallest, trick, behavior and overall best. People can pick up American Kennel Club information and freebies from many Canton-area dog organizations and see Canton Police's K-9 Unit in action as well as a Canton Pro K-9 dog-training demonstration. Free hot dog and soft drink.

4. Plan Ahead: Farmers Market

Peace, Love & Planet have a recycling trailer at the front of Canton Farmers Market (next to the historic Cherry Hill School, on North Ridge Road near Cherry Hill Road) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

5. Gas $3.75
