Newcomers kick off 40th season with a new name; Run for the Rouge; meet new bloggers.

1. Newcomers and More

The Canton Newcomers is celebrating its 40th anniversary with an expanded mission and a new name: . The group's kickoff meeting, a women-only event, is at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Sunflower Village's clubhouse, 45800 Hanford, west of Canton Center Road. RSVP online.

The evening will include socializing, interest group sign-ups and a raffle to benefit the with nibbles provided by Carrabba's. Attendees are asked to bring a gently used purse which will be part of an exchange.

2. New Patch Bloggers

In case you haven't noticed, Canton Patch has a few new bloggers  — you'll find some insights on the real estate market by 's Snail Mail for Seniors blog; and two points of view from a family hosting an exchange student from Poland with and Maggie. 3. Plan for 2012's Tax Season

A 1-hour class is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday — just for people 55 and older — all about retirement and tax planning strategies. The class is at . For details call Susan Doughty at  734-394-5481.

4. Gas: $3.78

The lowest price for gas in the township today — as of Monday evening according to GasBuddy.com, is at four locations: The BP at Ford Rd. and Sheldon, the Valero at Ford Rd. and Haggerty, the Speedway at Ford Rd. and Lilly and the Meijer at Ford Rd. and Canton Center.

5. Plan Ahead: Run For the Rouge

Today is the last day for early bird registration if you plan on participating in , a 5k trail run/walk set for 9 a.m. Sept. 17.

Advance entry fees are $30 (Friends of the Rouge members pay $25) after today, fees rise to $35 for non-members and $30 for members. And, if you register today, a T-shirt is guaranteed. This timed run follows the Lower Rouge River, so expect some uneven surfaces and the possibility of mud.

The top male and female finishers will earn prizes as will the participant who collects the most pledges for Friends of the Rouge.
