Five Things You Need to Know This Week

Monday is a township furlough day; two meetings on school funding are planned.

The Canton Township administrative offices are closed for a furlough day today. On Tuesday the township's board of Trustees meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday to discuss, among other things, a special land-use permit for ’s proposed gas station on Canton Center Road, just north of Michigan Avenue; reappointing Dave Wisniewski, CEO of , to Canton’s Downtown Development Authority – his 4-year term expired on April 10 but if township trustees approves, he’ll remain on the DDA until April 26, 2015 and a special liquor license for Canton’s 2011 Liberty Fest.

Teacher layoffs are on the agenda for the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools’ board, which meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Discovery Middle School, 45083 Hanford Rd. in Canton.

Education funding is the reason Michigan Rep. Dian Slavens, D-Canton plans to host a meeting at 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in ’s Walnut Room, 46000 Summit Pkwy. in Canton.

This morning Michigan Sen. Pat Colbeck, R-Canton, will have coffee with his 7th District constituents (which includes Canton) from 8 to 9 a.m. today at the Big Boy Restaurant, 27050 Telegraph Rd., Flat Rock.

Friday is National Mom Prom Night – and, while there doesn’t appear to be a full-out prom in the immediate area, offers this suggestion on the Mom Prom website: If you and your mom friends can’t arrange a prom by Saturday, simply go out to dinner and, if possible, dancing. Add up what you spend on yourself and make a donation in that amount to “a charity that is close to your heart,” she wrote. “Have fun and please send us the photos and stories of your night.”
