Five Things You Need to Know—Aug. 16, 2011

Plymouth-Canton school layoffs, recalls and the township's budget.

1. Plymouth-Canton School Board Meets

Layoffs and recalls are on the agenda for the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools' Board of Education. The board is scheduled to meet in executive session at 6 p.m., followed by an open meeting at 7 p.m. in the boardroom of the district offices, 454 S. Harvey St. in Plymouth.

2. Township Budget

The Canton Township Board of Trustees will meet at 7 tonight in the for a study session and to discuss the budget.

3. Help U.S. Military Overseas

Donations for the U.S. Army's Michigan-based 785th Military Police Battalion, which was sent to Afghanistan earlier this year, are needed by the VFW Mayflower Lt. Gamble Post 6695 Ladies Auxiliary. They will pack boxes starting at 2 p.m. Saturday to send overseas. Among the items needed: baby wipes, toiletries and AAA batteries. The full list is here. P.S. Classic car lovers can double their fun by bringing donations to the Vietnam Veterans of American Chapter 528's Cruz'n 528 Car Show, 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, at the VFW's parking lot. Food and drink sales benefit veterans' programs.

4. Gas: $3.65

Two gas stations are selling fuel for $3.65 a gallon, according to GasBuddy.com, as of 8 p.m. Monday: 7-Eleven, 45490 Michigan Ave. at South Canton Center Road, and , 44431 Michigan Ave.

5. Plan Ahead: Furlough Day

The , Canton Public Safety's records bureau,  and  administrative offices and the ordinance enforcement unit will be closed Friday for a furlough. Township offices reopen at 8:30 a.m. Monday. Police, fire and emergency services will operate normally, as will leisure services programs outside the township administration building.
