Museum's Christmas Exhibit Celebrates Charles Dickens

Plymouth Historical Museum's Dickens Christmas exhibit highlights snowy Victorian streetscapes, holiday cheer.

For Scrooges having a Dickens of a time getting into the holiday spirit, the Plymouth Historical Museum's latest exhibit might be the perfect cure for the Bah, Humbugs.

The museum opens A Dickens Christmas, an exhibit honoring Charles Dickens's 200th birthday, starting at 1 p.m. today. The exhibit will run 1-4 p.m. each Wednesday, Friday and Saturday through Jan. 13, Museum Executive Director Elizabeth Kerstens said.

Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children ages 6-17.

The museum will offer free admission, however, from 6:30-9 p.m. Friday when the City of Plymouth lights its holiday tree and welcomes Santa Claus' arrival. There will be a Santa's Workshop for children in the museum basement.

The museum also will have a craft show, bake sale and open house from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Dec. 1. Admission to the museum will be free during the open house, Kerstens said, and Santa Claus will be at the museum all day.

On Dec. 4, the museum welcomes back the Simply Dickens Christmas show for its third year, beginning at 7 p.m. The show will highlight lesser-known traditional carols, along with some more familiar tunes, Kerstens said.

Tickets to the Simply Dickens show are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Museum doors will open at 6 p.m.
