Weekend Planner: Charity Hockey, 'Songs of the Gypsy' and More

It's Thursday, and plenty of fun events start today or thereabouts, so we're offering up a weekend planner to give you a head start. Let's begin our countdown of things-to-do:

In Praise of Black History Month

  • Where:
  • When: 7 p.m. Thursday
  • Pricing: Free
  • Why Go: Celebrate Black History Month with a special performance by the Praise Choir from Canton Christian Fellowship Church.

In a Hearbeat Charity Hockey

  • Where:
  • When: 4:30 p.m. Saturday
  • Pricing: $12
  • Why Go: February is Heart Month, so in honor of that area emergency personnel are working to help raise awareness with a charity hockey game. You can get a heart risk assessment, and watch the Providence Hospital doctors take on the Novi Police. At 7:05 the Plymouth Whalers take on Windsor Spitfires. To buy tickets (good for both games), visit www.plymouthwhalers.com/buytickets for the Feb. 4 Whalers vs. Windsor game, click on Heartbeat Charity Game, enter HEART2 as your promotion code, and then $4 will go to the Providence Heart Institute.

Daddy-Daughter Dance at Fox Hills

  • Where:
  • When: 6-9 p.m. Saturday
  • Pricing: $23
  • Why Go: Fox Hills is hosting a daddy-daughter dance. Enjoy dinner, dancing and other memorable surprises.

Plymouth Daddy-Daughter Dance

  • Where:
  • When: 6:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday
  • Pricing: $10 per person
  • Why Go: The Plymouth Recreation Department holds its Daddy-Daughter Dance. Dance, enjoy light refreshments and snacks, in a semi-formal dressy-casual environment. Advance tickets must be purchased. No walk-ins allowed.

Songs of the Gypsy Concert

  • Where:
  • When: 4:30 p.m. Sunday
  • Pricing: $10 individual, $25 per family (suggested donation)
  • Why Go: Songs of the Gypsy is a recital featuring mezzo soprano Elizabeth Mitchell and pianist Lydia Qiu. The program includes gypsy music by Brahms, Verdi, Bizet, and Dvorak.
