Weekend Planner: Hockey, Muppets and More

Friday's here, and we want to make the best of weekend fun. Whether you're seeking a low-key movie afternoon, a seasonal concert, or a charity hockey game, we've got you covered. Read on, please, for ideas:

The Detroit Moose vs. Red Wings Alumni

  • Where: Arctic Edge Ice Arena
  • When: 5 p.m. Saturday
  • Pricing: $10 in advance, $15 at the door. Kids 10 and younger get in free.
  • Why Go: Catch the Detroit Moose Hockey Club face off against Red Wings Alumni. You'll see some great hockey and help raise funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Plus there will be raffle drawings (every ticket-holder is entered) for cool prizes that include Red Wings memorabilia, electronics and more.

Whalers Play Saginaw

  • Where: Compuware Arena
  • When: 7:05 p.m. Saturday
  • Pricing: $12-$16
  • Why Go: Catch some hockey action close to home as the Plymouth Whalers take on the Saginaw Spirit.

Open Chess Play

  • Where: Canton Public Library
  • When: 1-5 p.m. Sunday
  • Pricing: Free
  • Why Go: Stop at the library for open chess play, occurring two Sundays a month. Tim Heller, an avid player, hosts, and all ages are invited to play. If you're a beginner you can get instruction and practice, and if you're old hat, you'll find someone to play.

Family Friendly Film Series

  • Where: Michigan Theater, 603 W. Liberty St., Ann Arbor
  • When: 1:30 p.m. Sunday
  • Pricing: Free for kids 12 and younger, or $7.50-$10 otherwise
  • Why Go: Enjoy a family friendly film at the Michigan Theater. Hang out on a cold January afternoon with Kermit, Miss Piggy and the gang as they star in 1979's The Muppets Movie.

  • Board Gaming League of Canton, noon-5:45 p.m. Saturday, at . Ages 13+ can play board games, win a prize, make friends and more.
  • Knights of Columbus breakfast, 9 a.m.-noon Sunday at . Enjoy a full breakfast with all the fixings. $5 adults, $4 seniors, $3 kids younger than 10, and $15 per family.
  • Christmas concert at , 7 p.m. Sunday. Free, featuring the choirs, and followed by an afterglow reception.
