Give Back Locally on Giving Tuesday

If you're feeling generous this holiday season, here's how you can give locally.

You've heard of Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and even Cyber Monday, but what about Giving Tuesday? 

That's right, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving has become known as Giving Tuesday.

Now in its second year, Giving Tuesday originated as the brainchild of the 92nd Street Y, a nonprofit cultural and community center in New York. The idea is to create a day for giving back with global, national, statewide and local charities, families, businesses, students and more all coming together for #GivingTuesday.

There are many ways to participate. Whether you’re volunteering with a local charity, making a donation to your favorite nonprofit organization, spreading the word on social media, or taking and sharing your own #UNselfie, everyone can be a part of Giving Tuesday.

Here are some suggestions for giving locally:

Canton Community Foundation 
For more than 20 years, the Canton Community Foundation has provided grants for community service projects.

Humane Society of Huron Valley
HSHV is the community humane society for Plymouth and Canton. It cares for all of the local unwanted, lost, abused and abandoned animals. Each year HSHV helps over 10,000 dogs, cats, rabbits, and other small animals.

Plymouth Community Arts Council
The organization holds ongoing art exhibits, arts education programs, a theater program, concerts, recitals and more. It also organizes and puts on the Music in the Air program every summer in Kellogg Park.

Plymouth-Canton Music Boosters
The music boosters are a 501c3 non-profit group of parents and volunteers who support the band programs at the Plymouth-Canton Educational Park.

Plymouth Community United Way
The organization provides funding to health and human service agencies to assist residents in the Plymouth, Canton and Western Wayne communities. Additional services focus on specific areas of impact, such as strengthening families and assisting the elderly.

Salvation Army Plymouth Corps
The Salvation Army of Plymouth, we are a church (Corps) and a community center with several programs for fellowship such as Bible Study, Women's Ministries and Men's Fellowship. The office has a social services program (Family & Community Ministries department) where it can help meet the needs of those who are struggling financially in our community. The Community Center offers various programs throughout the year and these programs are open to all. 

Yankee Air Museum
The Yankee Air Museum is an aviation museum located at Willow Run Airport in Van Buren Township. The museum has a small fleet of flying aircraft and a collection of static display aircraft outdoors.
