Edward Bacon of Northville was rescued while hiking in the White Mountains during a storm in New Hampshire on Tuesday after he became stranded, according to Northville Patch.

The 59-year-old was on the third day of a five-day solo trek on the Franconia Ridge Trail when he fell and injured his hip, according to a press release from the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, which assisted in the rescue. He crawled to an area where he found cell reception and made two calls for help before losing reception.

2. Four honored for helping catch bank robbery suspect

Four Garden City men were deemed heroes for their role on Sept. 4 in catching a bank robberry suspect, according to the Observer & Eccentric.

Garden City Council honored residents Jason Frederick, Sandy Lyngvar, Ron Chambo and Steve Michalik at a Sept. 10 meeting for the men acting quckly to alert police about a holdup at Dearborn Federal Credit Union at Rush and Merriman, the report said. According ot the report, the men alerted police about a man wearing a mask and carrying a Colt AR-15 semi-automatic rifle demanding $100 bills from a bank teller. 

3. Canton airport serves as backdrop for film

Mettetal Airport in Canton served as a movie location Sept. 14 when Livonia resident Sam Logan Khaleghi brought crews in to work on his film Approaching Midnight, about a U.S. Army staff sergeant's return from Afghanistan, the Observer & Eccentric reported. Khaleghi serves as director, writer, producer and actor for the film, which he told the Observer he hopes to shop around to the independent film circuit.

4. Detroit Catholic Central ranked among top 50 Catholic schools in U.S.

Detroit Catholic Central High School of Novi has been selected as one of the top 50 Catholic high schools in the United States, according to Novi Patch.

CC has been named to the Cardinal Newman Society after applying for the first time. This distinction measures all Catholic high schools throughout the country on Catholic identity, academics and civic education.

5. Dearborn Man finishes second on CBS' Big Brother

Dearborn's Dan Gheesling was awarded $50,000 and is the runner up of the CBS reality show Big Brother, according to Dearborn Patch.

Gheesling previously won the game in 2008, and was brought back originally as part of a twist where he was a coach. The coaching status was later reset, and he became a full contestant competing for the grand prize.
