Exercise – Plan It and Schedule It, i.e., Make It A Commitment

Greg Greene, author of Fitness By Greg – You Are A Work In Progress…For The Rest Of Your Life! stresses the importance of planning and scheduling fitness workout routines.

All too often I hear things like ‘When I get around to it’, or ‘If I have time’, or ‘Let’s see how my day goes’, when talking about working out for fitness. When those words are said I know that the person saying them is not prioritizing their daily activities around fitness and wellness at all.

Even those who regularly engage in some sporting activities will use these phrases, obviously opting for those excuses and maybe even this one, ‘…and besides, I play (fill in the sport) every week. That’s plenty of exercise.’

Truth is that even though a body is engaged in a regular sport only certain muscles and systems in the body are pushed to a level that prompts improvement in the cause and effect realm. Sport-specific muscle training by coincidence, I would say, is what that entails. But, what about the rest of your body?

Recognizing that the entire body needs regular pushing to its limits and beyond, we need to make sure that it happens on a planned, scheduled basis. It is how you get it done.

When you have a planned sporting activity, you don’t say, ‘if I have the time’. It becomes a commitment in your day. You make the time and then you plan everything else around it, don’t you? The same should be conducted regarding fitness workouts.

What I do is plan and schedule each day for the coming week ahead. The particular day, the muscle groups that I am going to work, which days will contain cardiovascular training, even my one off-day, are all pre-planned. That way, I don’t have to even think about it on each day. I simply look at my calendar to determine what was planned for that day.

It serves two purposes. First, the thinking has already been done as to what I am going to work on, and secondly, and most importantly, the commitment has been made. That is, the commitment to myself.

Try it, and I know that you will benefit greatly from a lifestyle change like this. Remember to Commit To FIT!
