Help Yourself By Helping Someone Else

Author Greg Greene emphasizes the inside benefit of helping someone else unexpectedly while reaping the outside benefit of physical stress when doing the "work."

There is nothing more rewarding than to do something good for another, particularly when it is unexpected. Add to that good feeling inside a body-changing physical activity regimen, and you have completely transformed
yourself inside and out!

So rewarding it is, as a volunteer, to help someone with the appearance and livability of their home when they could not have done it for themselves. In Canton, we have the annual Christmas In Action (CIA) event, which is right around the corner this month. Let me tell you a little about it:

Every year, a group of people, together with the blessings of contributions and support of local businesses, take it upon themselves to volunteer to help elderly, less fortunate folks improve their homes in Canton.

Named Christmas In Action for its obvious "gift" to the resident ideology, this effort has been organized by a volunteer committee and supported by the township, local businesses and many citizen volunteers for more than a decade. This year, it takes place April 28.

As I said, the reward is there when you give of yourself to help someone
else. But, there is even more in store for you.

In addition to that good inside feeling comes the reward you feel on the
outside by the exercise you give your body with the physical work you provide
on someone else’s behalf. It usually is more strenuous that if you were even working on your own home, because of the push to get it done in one day, if possible.

Raking, sweeping, pounding, picking things up, laying things down,
climbing ladders, digging, painting, cleaning, you name it, it becomes one day
that’s very full of exercise that is disguised as work. It’s all good stuff.

At the end of the day, several homes are much better than they were at
the start of it, and a good feeling is shared by the volunteers that accomplish the transformations. It’s a win-win-win all the way around!
