How to search for your lost pet

You should never feel embarrassed about losing a pet. Starting the search for your missing animal as soon as possible after he or she goes missing can make all the difference in the world for finding them. Losing a beloved family member is never easy but there are things you can do. Please see our "Tips for Finding Your Lost Animal" for more things you as the owner can do to find your pet.

All dogs and most cats from the Canton/Plymouth area will be brought to the Humane Society of Huron Valley in Ann Arbor. HSHV has developed guidelines with city officials to care for your stray/lost animals.

  • Please fill out the HSHV lost and found report. This will be sent to our shelter's Intake Department where it will be added in our system. Though the shelter staff is always checking for matches in our system, it is still very important that you are checking as well and you should come to the shelter to look for your lost pet. No one will recognize your pet faster or better than you! Once you send your report in, you will receive email confirmation with further instructions. You can respond to that email with a photograph/JPEG of your pet.

  • If you lost an animal outside of HSHV's service area (Washtenaw County and Plymouth/Canton), please contact your local stray holding facility to determine their procedures for lost animals. Here is a list of other SE Michigan animal holding facilities.

  • Please take a moment to look at the STRAY CATS/STRAY DOGS page on our website because that will show you animals currently at our shelter being held as strays. Please do not assume that if your animal is not listed there that it is not as out shelter. If the animal has been in the shelter for a period of time, it may not appear on the website any longer.

  • If you have any questions about Lost/Found Reports in general, if you think you've spotted a match on the website, or if you want to follow up on your own situation, please contact us at Lost and Found Line (734) 661-3545.

All lost and found reports must be approved before being published for the public to see. Please allow up to 24 hours for your report to be visible on our website. Your report will expire after 90 days, but if you need or want to extend that time, please contact HSHV at (734) 661-3545. Also, if you have reunited with a lost or found pet please email us at lostandfound@hshv.org or call (734) 661-3545 so we can remove your report from the site.

If your pet does not have a microchip ID, please consider having this quick and painless procedure done. All shelters and most veterinarians have universal recognition systems to check for a chip. It is the best way for you to be reunited with your lost pet. HSHV’s veterinary clinic, which is open to the public, offers these chips for just $25 for dogs and $15 for cats.
